Phone numbers

Experian (Formerly TRW): Call 888-397-3742. Fax: 972-390-3809. There is a voicemail system is available in Spanish or English. This lets you record your request if you by chance you were turned down for credit, employment, or insurance.

If you have not recently been denied credit, the system will quote a price and tell you how to write for a copy of your report.

Caution: if your phone request gets lost in the system, then you'll have to write to the Credit Bureau. If your letter is later than 30 days after you were denied credit, employment, or insurance, you might have to pay for the report. In your letter, it's a good idea to mention the actual date you requested the report by phone (so keep a note of this). Experian also requests that you follow up your phone order with a written request containing proof of address, your Driver's License (certified/notarized copy), your Name, Date of Birth and Social Security Number.

If you are turned down for credit, employment, or insurance within the last 60 days. Submit written proof of your turn down and mail it to the credit bureaus, requesting your free report (use this request credit report letter).

If you've been charged higher interest rates, fees or deposits because of a credit report issued by a credit bureau, then it's your right to get a free copy from that bureau.

If you certify in writing that either:

You are unemployed and plan to seek employment in the next 60 days
If you are on welfare
If you were a victim of fraud

... then you are entitled to a copy of your report free (use the sample request credit report letter above).

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), some states have laws requiring the bureaus to provide one free credit report per year. To find out if your state requires this and more details about the cost of ordering your report, see our How to get a copy of your credit report on state credit report costs. The FACT Act of 2003 allows everyone, anywhere, to get one free report each year from each of the credit reporting agencies from December 2004.
